Title: Static - is it really that big of deal Post by: rip|Highlander on December 01, 2006, 01:04:11 PM So I read up a little bit about static and PC stuff.
I got one of those little wrist band thingys and I assume I just connect it to a metal piece of the tower when its open before I touch anything right? next question is should I pick up one of those Static Mats? If so they have a grounding cord thingy - where do I attach this to - same things as the wrist band. I heard some of the wrist things are a one time use deal. Last time I installed RAM and a new Graphics card into my comp I just put the thing on a towel and opened it up and touched the case with my hand before I touched anything else. I think HB and some others advised this. Just curious thanks Title: Static - is it really that big of deal Post by: rip|forkev on December 01, 2006, 01:10:43 PM just touch the metal case 1st
What did people do before all that other crap??? Title: Static - is it really that big of deal Post by: rip|mrkavanagh on December 01, 2006, 01:16:38 PM Step 1: Take off your shoes.
Step 2: Drag feet across carpet Step 3: Touch Case Title: Static - is it really that big of deal Post by: chiefjedi on December 01, 2006, 03:04:52 PM Quote from: "mrkavanagh" Step 1: Take off your shoes. I work on my home PCs on the carpet, never had an issue.
Although it is good practice to use a static strap and mat it is not necessary. Just don't do something stupid like rub a ballon on your head and then drag your socks on the carpet and touch a PCB. Just touch the metal case as often as possible if you are moving around a lot. Title: Static - is it really that big of deal Post by: rip|Highlander on December 01, 2006, 11:09:43 PM no the towel thing wasnt a joke. I am pretty sure someone suggest it the last time I post on how I install ram like 2 years ago. Most likely someone posted it sarastically and I thought it was a good idea lol.
Alight I just got a wrist strap thing to be on the safe side, seemed like a good use of 5$ - Touching the case frequently sounds like a plan. Thanks for the help Title: Static - is it really that big of deal Post by: rip|Dantes on December 02, 2006, 03:37:10 PM Quote from: "Jackal" OK first let me tell you that I have been working on PCs for over 5 years and have not fried one PC component due to static. I just keep myself grounded at all times by touching the case. Title: Static - is it really that big of deal Post by: rip|Highlander on December 02, 2006, 05:23:43 PM Thanks a ton :-)
