(http://www.speedtest.net/result/183906879.png) (http://www.speedtest.net) That actually shocks me, so i went to dslreports and tried their tests... There's obviously some kind of caching going on with the first test...although i still don't believe my upstream speed.

buz whats the difference between the two servers your tested. I assume the server New York would be a better ping than the parsippany
Title: looks like comcast did something right
Post by: rip|buzinator on September 12, 2007, 07:02:00 AM
about the same.
the first one is basically bogus. it uses server side caching, shows the highest speed possible on a local transfer (between you and your ISP) ... the 2nd one is a longer test with a variety of files of different sizes and doesn't use the caching ... thus giving a better idea of general internet speed. that's my theory anyway, in any case, NYC and parsippany are not really different from where i am ... and yet, a big difference.

The only thing that I think I pretty accurate is watching the speed in Newsbin Pro. You can see by this pic that it is 20.1Mb/s or 2.5MB/s

It isn't free. You can try to find a cracked version. They are about the same anyway. I still use both.
Title: QUESTION???
Post by: rip|forkev on September 16, 2007, 04:26:57 PM
I had DSL @ 3.0 M and upgraded to the 6.0. I am using a wireless router but could only pull 3.9 down MAX with the upgrade. I pluged into my motem and now it is at over 5

(http://www.speedtest.net/result/185054588.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
If I'm stitting next to my rouer and it says I'm connected @ 54 Mbps, why don't I have a better connection wireless.
Maybe there is something wrong with my router?

You need to have a tin foil hat like this guy. The ears will give you a better wireless signal.

Could you rephrase this? Perhaps using English? Attempting to respond to the question i think you asked... if you have more than 1 pc connected, the bandwidth is shared and you'll only see a fraction of it per PC. have you checked for firmware upgrades of the router? OK, you tried it pluged into the motem (sic) ... what about plugged into the router? to at least determine if it's the router as a whole, or just the wireless side?
Title: looks like comcast did something right
Post by: rip|forkev on September 17, 2007, 08:01:32 AM
OK, The computer is in the same room as the wireless router, not more than 6' away.
The question is, Why isn't my internet speed higher or the same (If I plug a ethernet cable into the router or just use the wireless "g" connection.
Only one pc was connected to the wireless router, that is protected.
Have NOT checked for a firmware update of the router. I have the mentality of - if it's not broke, don't fix it.
I did not use the modem only connection - always tested with the router.

I did not use the modem only connection - always tested with the router. k, well, that's not what you said, so how else would i know? moving on ... if you have 5 bars and 54mbps on the wireless card, that's great, i'm not doubting signal strength, I'm wondering about the firmware programming or even how the wireless controller chip inside the router works. perhaps they're using a wifi controller chip that blows...it is an extra step between the pc and the dsl modem where stuff can go awry. as for you attitude towards updating the router firmware, if it ain't broke, WHY ARE WE HAVING THIS CONVERSATION? ;)

[as for you attitude towards updating the router firmware, if it ain't broke, WHY ARE WE HAVING THIS CONVERSATION? I KNEW you were going to say something about that. I was going to touch on that subject but I decided to leave it WIDE open for you to respond. Apparently NOW it is time to "fix" it since it seems to be "broken". It's no Biggie, I was just wondering why it is doing that. I can just use the ethernet cable and not worry about it.

that Kbps, divide by 8 bitrate is the standard network bandwidth measurement. byterate is typically only used when referring to hard drives. my guess would be that this is because networking developed as a serial technilogy where as hard drives, for a long time anyway, were a parallel technology. quoting a byterate in reference to network speed is pretty useless/annoying.

A Happy New Year present from Comcast ... woke up today and noticed my torrents running at like 2x normal speed. Nearly fell over. (http://www.speedtest.net/result/382312196.png) (http://www.speedtest.net) I've been sustaining these speeds for over an hour now, it's not just PowerBoost or Burst working on a single speedtest. I guess the Fiber ISP's are finally lighting a fire under cable's ass. About f'ing time! EDIT: I just ran Speakeasy's (http://speakeasy.net/speedtest/) test ... holy crap. Last Result: Download Speed: 25302 kbps (3162.8 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 4271 kbps (533.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

I remember people posting this stuff when RCN was testing their network in some new markets. People got an increase of speed that didn't pay for it. It was only a test and didn't last too long. Maybe a month or so.
You can always call and find out if yours was upgraded or if they are just testing it.
Now you can put up a server at your house now too. ;)
