I use AVG Free.

and the only issue i have with AVG's stuff is that on a machine connected via wifi, avg will try to update before the wifi is connected and produces and error that it can't connect (duh) ... Once connected it works fine, just an annoyance.

I believe Nod32 (http://www.eset.com/) is generally considered the best.

At work we currently run McAfee VirusScan & AntiSpyware 8.5i ... it does function, i can't complain about whether it's effective. However, it is bloated. Each process related to it consumes about 5 - 10 times the RAM of AVG. It's a pig. I wish we weren't locked into it at work but we are, volume licensing and contracts etc, what a pain. (although enterprise management via ePO is pretty awesome)

Avast is a good free one with Vista compatibility...

As buz stated AVG is another good free one

That is really it for the free ones ....    And yes Nod32 I have heard is a very good, just not free.

Found a site giving away AVG Pro ... it's a slow download but as far as i know it's legit.

You'll want to right-click, save as on that the download button, that way it shouldn't time out, in Firefox anyway.
