Title: NASCAR and the Future of Sports Gaming Licenses
Post by: toadly on March 02, 2009, 03:34:04 PM
Because I know Buz is concerned about Nascar games having a more competitive market:

Did the exclusivity deal with NASCAR actually hurt the series financially over the past six years?

I would say so. As someone who never bought a copy of any of EA's NASCAR games.

Same with Sony and F1 ... that exclusive license just made me annoyed at both franchises, irritation that led to me being LESS likely to buy a playstation...cuz, well, fuck them!

Sure it's an improvement that Codemasters have the F1 license now since the game might actually come out in a format I play. But the exclusivity is still there and it's still annoying because the last couple Codies racing games have had some fairly serious flaws IMO, steps backward rather than forward ... and I anticipate more of the same with the F1 game.

If, say, SimBin were allowed to license the F1 brand too, then we might see some cool stuff as multiple companies compete ... but oh welll...

Maybe you should just embrace Nascar.

There are drivers I follow, but I have issues with the series' governance...in addition to there being way too many oval races (why can't they mix it up more, like the IRL?).

In any case, what the article is implying is that exclusive licensing carries a risk of us all being forced to endure long periods of nothing but crap games...which seems like not a great way to do business, and I agree with that. It's monopolistic and stifles innovation.

LOL you have an issue NASCAR's governance?  What about F1's?!  And F1 doesn't have enough oval races...

But yeah, licensing sucks

:)

Sure the FIA has issues, no doubt ... but one example of something they do better is publishing the rules. The NASCAR rulebook is secret as far as I can tell...the fans are largely in the dark as to how the sport works.

As a former resident of "Race City USA" I feel compelled to dredge this thread up.

In my opinion, NASCAR is the little leagues of racing. Watching grown men take gentle lefts for hours is a stupid pastime. Add to that the fact that NASCAR is a family venture, and the France family holds so much power that they can dictate anything they wish pisses me off (See: NASCAR Museum, restrictor plates, flag manipulation to tighten the field). Added to the fact that the "stock" cars are so far from true stock cars that they all look, feel and handle the same.

Ooooo, and don't get me started on NASCAR "heroes" like the Earnhardt family........

Mooresville, NC.

About 30 miles north of Charlotte, most major teams have a shop there. DEI and Simpson being the most prominent. And the Earnhardts, apart from Teresa to an extent, are mostly self important douchebags. So much that they lobbied the county to reduce the speed limit on the highway outside DEI from 55 to 45. They also ended up renumbering the road HWY3 after the dumb bastard forgot that right turns are bad in NASCAR and hit the wall.
