Title: The F1 Nerdism Thread (Yay!)
Post by: rip|buzinator on April 15, 2009, 10:16:35 AM
ok ... here's one to get things rolling ...

What's my new avatar? (be detailed/precise)

Bonus: Why am I suddenly using it?

Rear of a Brawn GP car, focused on their controversial double-decker diffuser.

Because the FIA just deemed Toyota, Williams, and Brawn's diffusers legal.

yawn.

Ok, now for something off the wall...

Name the owner of the team who raced this car.

Without looking it up, no clue ... though I see it says Alfa Romeo on the side.

Parmalat is Brazilian so perhaps that's a clue to the driver? Fittipaldi? ... but you asked for the team Owner... really drawing a blank ... was Max or Bernie? I know they ran teams in the 70's.

Wait - the vortex diffuser thingy ... wasn't that a controversial Brabham?

Yup.  The "Fan Car" from Brabham that was owned by Bernie Ecclestone.  Thought it was fitting given how you started it off.

Oh no hint needed for that one!

Michael deliberately parked sideways down in Ras Casse (sp?) to red flag Qualifying at Monaco, in an attempt to prevent Alonso from taking P1 from him.

Deservedly, the FIA threw the book at him.

Ok, I think I'm gonna get this one wrong.

I'm going to guess Timo Glock at Hockenheim.  I remember the crash being bad, but I don't think he got that much air.

Disclaimer:  I didn't have speed from like 2003 through 2007, so specific race incidents in that range are going to be hard for me as I only got to watch 10% of the races and got the rest of my info from websites.

Title: Re: The F1 Nerdism Thread (Yay!)
Post by: rip|ChITty on April 15, 2009, 01:16:40 PM
However, now looking at the image info for that picture and it being located on a German site, I have a higher confidence level of it being Glock (cause he's German).  Although I probably got it right for the wrong reasons.

Disclaimer:  I didn't have speed from like 2003 through 2007...

Ouch, that hurts. Although this was 2002, it was Alan McNish at Suzuka's 130R. Really, really big impact that actually went through the barrier. He was very lucky he went in backwards.

We're kindred spirits here, no hints needed.

The Tamburello was where Senna died.

I only went to Monza on my recent trip to Italy, but on the next trip I WILL be making the pilgrimage to Imola.

Here's possibly a tricky one ... don't answer too quick! Take a moment to think about it :)

We act like Brawn GP is a new team, but they're not really ... if you traced ownership back, who was this team ORIGINALLY?

Quadruple points - What team was the most recent genuine new one? Built from scratch?

1,000,000 point triple bonus question - What do we know that team as now?

Close, but Becketts is earlier, after Copse.

This one is Stowe ... scene of famous overtaking moves by Mansell and Coulthard ... also the spot where Schumacher had a brake failure and subsequently broke his leg.

Sure.

Michael Schumacher (the greatest driver ever according to the stats) took 3 years to get his first pole position.  Schumacher got his first pole position in the race after a significant F1 happening.  What was that happening?

(Hint: I personally think that Schumacher was a good driver, but with mostly poor competition).

Title: Re: The F1 Nerdism Thread (Yay!)
Post by: rip|buzinator on April 16, 2009, 11:29:15 AM
k ... I don't know - the only significant thing I can think of in that kind of timeframe would be Senna's death. Senna was the qualifying king...with him out of the way I imagine it was a lot easier for Michael to get up front.

Ok, keeping the Senna theme...

Name the  world champions (at that point & eventual) that Senna passed in the most famous F1 opening lap (Donnington 1993)?

Bonus points for the number of world championships they won in total in their careers (excluding Senna's)

Maybe, Prost & definitely Hill ... the Benetton ... hmmm, not sure if that' Piquet or Schumi. It's only 93, so perhaps I'll go with Piquet. So that's 3 champs, with I think 7 titles?

Prost, Hill, Schumacher (who tries squeezing him off track at the start, but gets dealt with shortly after).

Prost (4), Hill (1), Schumacher (7)

It wasn't an attack... more of a friendly reminder of our discussion where I mentioned that I thought Vettel was going to do better than Webber this year in the same equipment.  Season's not over yet, but I just wanted to give you a hard time while I could.   :D

Well, let's make vettel 32 years old, break his leg and shoulder and see how he goes then.

for my part, yes, i am living in the past as i have a big problem with vettle having taken webber out during a SAFETY car period. The last two people to be killed in F1 were track workers ... i have familiy who have done track work ... Formula One is not the place you come to learn how to drive behind the safety car. people can get killed and it is not funny. I don't deny the kid is fast, but so far, he is a kid, and i think he's dangerous.

Just ask Buemi.

Do you think Senna would have checked up to look at a car he was passing, causing the guy behind to run into the back of him? I don't. Stupid, stupid thing to do.

I've been watching Buemi for about 3 years now (GP2 and A1GP) and he's a rammer, up there with the likes of yet another Red Bull driver, Michael Ammermuller.

Title: Re: The F1 Nerdism Thread (Yay!)
Post by: rip|buzinator on April 21, 2009, 08:13:18 AM
I actually hadn't realized the incident was under the safety car. That does explain why Vettel was hesitant to overtake Trulli.

And yes, buz does dislike Buemi, he shouldn't have been going so fast, there's a minimum lap time you're not permitted to go faster than (for safety reasons), seems like he may have been heading for a penalty in any case.

Can we move on to some normal trivia rather than sniping at each other, this is very unpleasant.

Very good, just mixed up a couple.

1. Alonso (4.4 pts/race)
2. Raikkonen (3.7 pts/race)
3. Massa (2.7 pts/race)
4. Barrichello (2.0 pts/race)

Yup, Webber (0.9 pts/race) - Vettel must be knocking him to the side every race on his way to score more points.  :P :D ;) :)

Kids:
1. Hamilton (5.6 pts/race)
2. Kubica (2.8 pts/race)
3. Kovalainen (2.3 pts/race)
4. Vettel (1.8 pts/race)

Yup, Sutil (0.03 pts/race)

Name as many American (citizens, at the time) who drove an F1 car in a race.

I've got 6 off the top of my head.

Name as many US GP host cities as you can (I can name 4).

Tracks: Watkins Glen, Longbeach, Detroit, Indianapolis ... hmmm, I feel like there might be another but i can't think of it.

Those were the same drivers I could think of as well.  Guess there was at least 10 though.

Mine were Indianapolis, Detroit, Phoenix, and Dallas.

Apparently there were races hosted at Vegas (caesars palace to be exact), Riverside (California), and Sebring.

Well, after visiting his son's website, I can truly say that I don't care.  I'll take a fail on that question.

Sauber?

Speaking of Alesi, he was one of my favorites, strangely for no particular reason.  It's not like he was particularly good, or a large personality, but there was always a part of me rooting for him.

He was always spectacular to watch ... a passionate driver with loads of style. He'd probably make an awesome drifter.

It was Jordan btw.

104 for Schumacher & Barrichello
98 for Coulthard & Hakkinen

In double checking that answer I came across another question.

Which year had the most f1 races?

Refuelling & tire-warmers banned for 2010 ... Good, Bad or Indifferent?

Title: Re: The F1 Nerdism Thread (Yay!)
Post by: rip|ChITty on April 30, 2009, 02:05:13 PM
Tire warmers banned = bad (they want MORE accidents?)
Refuelling banned = bad

I think they want more overtaking ... I'm on the fence about it. Working cold tires is definitely a skill. IDK, I guess i'm kinda OK with it.

Refuelling banned = bad

Your reasoning? There's a very valid safety argument for it...(just ask Steve Matchett)

Title: Re: The F1 Nerdism Thread (Yay!)
Post by: rip|ChITty on April 30, 2009, 02:53:59 PM
Why remove a strategy option for the teams?  If it's about safety, I will simply say that the NASCAR can handle refueling...

My biggest issue is forcing them to make a pitstop to change to a different type of tire.  That's what should be gone if it's not already a change to the 2010 regulations.

I think a team should be able to gas up the tank all the way and run the complete distance on one set of tires if they want to.  They should also be able to run with whatever fuel load they want and make as many tire changes as they deem advantageous.

Given how Truly bogged up Vettel, Hamilton, and Barrichello in Bahrain on his bad set of tires because they are mandated to them, that's the regulation that needs to go for the sake of the show.  Screw the other ones.

Oh come on!  I was just sharing a amusing picture I came across.  If I came across a picture of Vettel holding the same shirt up I would have posted that as well with the same comment.

Dispite what you might think, I'm no particular fan of Vettel, although I do think he's fast and I find his exuberance entertaining.  For the record, I also like Webber, I think he's a good sport and has worked hard to get where he is.

Shame on me for I do not know.

Is it a trick question? Perhaps, despite the fact women have competed, none of them scored points?

No trick question, I'll give Chitty a shot before I throw the answer up.

For what it's worth, it was 1975 when it happened.

Lella Lombardi. She only got .5 point, because of the shortened race.

(only F1 era needed but props for mentioning ones from earlier periods)

1. Silverstone
2. Donnington
3. ?

Title: Re: The F1 Nerdism Thread (Yay!)
Post by: rip|buzinator on October 02, 2009, 09:09:15 AM
I'll say that the total number is not correct and also that Donington is partially right in that it has never hosted the British Grand Prix, but is scheduled to do so.

("But, but, SENNA! In the rain!" you say? "European Grand Prix" I respond.)
