I've been playing around with making a new car skin for the last couple of days with GIMP and I have to say it's pretty user friendly.  My previous attempts at poking around at a skin was using Photoshop 6.0 (old, yes I know) which didn't have support for the layers, so it was editing the flat dds file which wasn't very fun.  But, even at a simple user interface level I've found GIMP more enjoyable to use.  Oh, and it's free.

I guess it's go with what works for you, but it seems like i try GIMP out annually and I can never get comfortable with it. Too accustomed to the PS way of doing, everything, I guess.

Is there a DDS plugin that works with GIMP? (or does it do DDS natively perhaps?)

I tried GIMP but the resolution when scaling logos down was no where close to Photoshop. I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Yeah, I guess if you have Photoshop there's not much of a reason to play around with it, but if you don't have the 600 for photoshop or don't want to be bothered to hunt up a clean warez version of it, this might be the way to go. 

I found a DDS plugin on the web fairly easily.
