So whats better about these tracks compared to the hundreds of free tracks for Simbin and other similar racing sims? Just curious...

Don't know about better. It depends on how you look at it.
I'm a racer, always will be and sim-racing has always been a BIG hobby of mine as well. Mix the 2 and you get I-racing.
I-racing is for hardcore sim racers! If thats what you are then it's hard to argue paying for it. We all spend our $$ in some way.
To me it's all about the physics. Thats what Gran Turismo had going for it back in the day, when they actually made games instead of talking about making them.
Heres what a few "common folk" think:
"Accuracy is the most important thing. In the iRacing simulation, the corner spacing and radii are exactly right. Bumps, camber changes, curbing, changes in surface all have an influence on the optimal line, and iRacing has that level of detail. It's great for learning tracks and cars, but even if you already know a track, you can refresh yourself, so you're not spending the first session getting up to speed. You can attack straight away".
Justin Wilson
F1 and Indy Car Driver
"The iRacing.com simulation is far and away the most realistic driving simulation I've ever seen. The graphics are stunning, the tracks look virtually identical to the real thing, and the cars move and react in a way that will train you to be a better, smoother driver. I am addicted"!
Alex Gurney

That makes a lot of sense. Is there an open wheel trial? I might be interested in that, but it almost seems too technical for me. I like to be the driver and let the engineers setup the car

since we're waiting for GT5, and I personally am not 100% sold on it yet anyway, I went and did the buy 1 month get 2 free thing.
We'll see what we see.
I did two runs at Limerock in the Solstice and am still 4sec off BP's times...although those might have been achieved with setup tweaks, being a rookie I can't even change tire pressure.

You would have to buy on "open wheeler" if you were just starting. You could test with it or run in a hosted session with others until you have the license for the car. But not sanctioned races.
Skip barber, star mazda, IRL and 79' Lotus F1 car are the choices.
The Spec ford has some other adjustments. The setups get more complex as you go up obviously. There are baseline setups and you can share realtime with other s while playing.

That's what I got ... you get a Legends car, Pontiac Solstice & a Spec Racer (which I think is like the GT Lite from ToCA3).

so if we raced with you, would we race on your level or would you race on our level?
Are those 3 cars my only choice? I am looking at the website and it's not very clear. I guess I will try out the buy 1 get 2 free promo.....

We would all be on the same level. We all just have to have the same track and car of choice. Once you buy a car or track, its yours for use whenever.

By the way, the MX-5 Cup car is going to replace the slowstice soon, it will be free obviously. It is a much much better handling car than the pontiac.
I'm not sure if it replaces it this coming season or if it is going to wait longer, I don't see why they would not have it for the new season though as they just showed it off on iracing.tv
Out of the rookie road cars the Spec Racer Ford is by far my favorite, it is so good in training throttle control and being at the right speed at the right time.
On the tracks, for me it is amazing, comparing Zandy on Race series to iRacing's is like comparing little leagues to pro leagues. They use laser scanning to get everything spot on, they actually goto the track and collect a large amount of data. I got to drive Mid-Ohio over the summer and I see no difference in the iRacing version.
Currently though I am racing in the Skip Barber Series. It is the step below the F3000 equivalent, Star Mazda. Still deciding which car I will run next season, either Star Mazda or another Season in the Skippy.
The Skippy is one the most popular road series on iRacing and gets a lot of higher classed racers, even though they can run any other car. Makes for great close racing.
The ranking is another great feature, each race that happens will be split into groups of similar iRating so you will always be on a similar pace with the other drivers. Although if there are not enough drivers to make more than one race it will put everyone together, which does not happen to often. Right now I usually get in the second split in the Skippy, it usually goes to four or five splits during peak hours.
