When it comes to the ever-intensifying war between Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, EA is out for blood. Only days after Activision pulled back the curtain on Call of Duty Elite – a premium service for Black Ops and Modern Warfare 3 – the folks over at DICE have announced they’re also rolling out enhanced social features for Battlefield 3. The cost to gamers? Zero dollars.

In an announcement detailing their involvement at E3, the Battlefield 3 developers discuss their role in preparing the single and multiplayer demo they’ll have on display at E3 during EA’s June 6 press conference. Interestingly, they also touted what won’t be at E3 (emphasis added by author):

Of course there are things we will not be showing at E3, including the game’s extensive co-op campaign, the introduction of Team Death Match mode and the Battlefield 3 Battlelog web destination – featuring powerful social tools, feeds and detailed player stats. Battlelog also lets you manage your friends lists, squad up, create platoons, use voice chat and follow your friends’ progress in real-time, and more. Battlelog will be available for the monthly fee of (drum roll)… zero dollars. We look forward to providing more information on these features in the near future!

The Battlelog features are strikingly similar to what CoD Elite offers. We can’t ignore the possibility that there could be an enhanced, paid version of Battlelog, but we doubt it will happen. For the past several months, EA has consistently challenged Activision over the upcoming November FPS crown, and they’re illustrating that they’ll do whatever is necessary to steal away the Call of Duty faithful.
