I'm seriously thinking about picking up a Traxxas slash as my first rc truck.  Any thoughts on those?

What I'm looking for is low maintenance (no nitro), fairly inexpensive, but fun.

A Slash is a good truck. My first RC was a Traxxas Electric Rustler. It was very low maintenance, very fast, and tuff! You wont be unhappy with anything that traxxas makes.

The sad thing is that no RC is cheap. Yes you might only pay $300-$400 for the truck and batteries, but the hobby is expensive. Good batteries cost around $30 bucks a piece. The reason why I say its not cheap is because you will always want the RC to be better. You will want it to go faster, you will want it to look cooler, etc. etc. There are tons of Upgrade parts out there and so much that you can add to them. Not to mention that once you get bit by the bug you will want to go brushless and lipo.

lol yeah I've already been looking into that brushless and lipo battery option and wondering if I should just start off there.

Here's what I'm about to pull the trigger on.

My biggest concern is the battery/charger combo.  Is that charger overboard?  Am I going to get acceptable performance out of that battery (20 mins with 30 mph)?  Could I go brushless with that battery?  Would there be a point to go brushless with a non-lipo battery?

Those are good choices!

Yes you can go brushless with out lipo. You can always invest in lipos later. The difference between brushless and brushed is huge! I suggest this combo

Go with the 6900 or the 7700. Plan on replacing parts on a regular basis. The speeds are insane! I have an 18th scale brushless with lipo and it does 50mph easy. http://www.castlecreations.com/products/mamba_max.html

If you want to just bite the bullet and buy the best RC with the brushless already in it. This is it!

http://www.rcplanet.com/Traxxas_E_Revo_Brushless_Monster_Truck_RTR_p/tra5608.htm

It has the largest brushless motor in it made.
