Is that required now? or are they testing alternatives?

they are getting rid of the wing and going back to a spoiler sometime this season. something about how the wing does what the name implies and sends the cars airborne when they spin around

Your right it's ugly, another reason the wing has to got go, is that the teams have never been able to get the push out of the car since the wing due to the side plate.
As far as the air, when the car is moving backward air gets stuffed under the back of the car lifting it a few inches, that changes the angle of the wing adding even more lift, it made for good TV, lol

The camber (curvature) of the wing, regardless of airflow direction, should produce downforce, rather than lift.
The endplates of the wing should increase downforce efficiency due to elimination of induced/rollover-vortex drag.
So I'm pretty surprised to see incidents like Brad's. Something has to be wrong with the implementation IMO. Mounted too low to the trunk perhaps, I have trouble seeing a wing getting proper airflow being so low.
or it could be the whole car design needs to change. have they even given any though of the effect of under-car aerodynamics? Or did they just slap a wing on cuz it looked cool and now they're doing a knee-jerk so they look like they're addressing the issue and avoid spectator lawsuits?

well i think it actually has something to do with the fact that it actually sticks off the back of the car to much
look how far it sits off the rear

Thats not a wing, it's a fancy spoiler, from what I understand the end plate is keeping the car form spining as much, because of it's surface area as the car gets sideways.
The first 1.5 mile track with the conventional spoiler should be pretty good, practice will be worth watching.

Yh but nascar also want a 500 mile race decided in 2 laps ... after the full race distance has been completed.
If they're using the endplates as vertical stabilizers, they need to be bigger.
If they really want it to behave as a wing, it needs to be 6 inches higher in the air....
If they want to have a spoiler ... just put a fricking spoiler on and stop wasting everyone's time.
Looks like they're finally choosing the latter. Which makes me wonder wtf was the point of the "wing" exercise in the first place. They wanted to look like they had a wing I guess.

I guess they should have put on afterburners and laid out some cones too.
