Trouble with Vent last night

Hey Guys,

Just wanted to post about an incident BP and I had last night on Vent. I am not sure how or what happened exactly. Just before our race was to start, we got an error in Ventrilo that kicked us out saying 'duplicate names not allowed' or something like that. Sorry fuzzy on the details but we rejoined and it kept kicking us so we went the race without vent in case it happened again. Luckily I have most alert sounds turned off but BP was reporting that a noise from vent was being spammed before getting kicked.

This was due to a troll, they've been banned.

Is it time to close vent to the public? Sometimes I look and see a bunch of random people on our vent that I have no idea who they are. I worried something like this might happen.

This was my first concern when it was initially suggested that we open it up.

Otoh, although there have been a few incidents, it's not nearly as much as I'd feared.

From Racing/RPG pov, I think we would be happy to see it made private again, but will survive with public, if that's the consensus (or edict from Ripper).

It was opened up on behalf of the FPS guys, perhaps you all should have a chat about it, with Ripper, MW3 guys & BF3 guys available...

I think it was good when we had a BF3 server. Could have been a good way to get new recruits but now that we dont have the server I dont see the benefit. Just the downside.

Stuff like this happens when you have a lot of mixed gaming groups. You can't tell who is who. I've looked at people every time I am in vent and wondered if they are Rip members or not. When you make a public ventrilo, one of the easiest ways you can take care of issues like this, is to make a group and place every member in it. Then they will have to set up a password to log in with and their name can not be duplicated. Plus it should have something in front of the username to show that they are part of that group.
My previous way of setting up a vent server was just like that. Only that non registered users could not move out of the main lobby channel. Everyone in the group was giving the ability to move users from channel to channel. Among this group, you then grant some of the members the ability to kick/ban. Making sure that there is always someone online or easily able to hop online, that can kick/ban the spammers.

Yeah, I've been trying to avoid that exact scenario for a long time, it's going to be high maintenance. But perhaps I'm fighting a losing battle. Will have to consider, along with giving a couple others ability to change users' passwords when they forget them.
